THE SEAM / A LINE NEEDS A MEANING

AN ACCOUNT OF THE SEAMS

THE PATTERN

A thing is also an arrangement.

A pile of parts and an organized system may contain the same kinds of material but behave differently. The arrangement matters. Naming the components is not yet an account of what holds them together.

The imagined cosmos in these pages is a web of scales and relations. Its useful demand is modest: do not isolate a part so completely that you forget the conditions that make it what it is.

THE SEAM

Name the connection.

A seam may be a physical interaction, an information channel, a shared constraint, or an association you invented. Use different marks for different kinds of line.

In the drawing, red thread is an artist’s choice. In a scientific account, a line needs a defined meaning. In a personal practice, it needs an observable consequence.
