A repeated number is an event.
Its significance is another claim.

What caught your eye?

After choosing a mark, you may begin seeing its shape elsewhere. After choosing a number, it may appear on clocks, receipts, and windows. Your attention has a new category to sort by. The world has also supplied many opportunities to match it.

Write down the surprising instance, but write down the search field as well. How many clocks did you see? How many receipts? How many numbers did not match? A numerator without a denominator is a persuasive little story.

If you watched a made-up two-digit display with 100 equally likely outcomes, a particular pair would have probability 1/100 on each independent observation. After 100 independent looks, the chance of at least one match would be 1 − (99/100)¹⁰⁰, about 63%. Real clocks are not independent random displays. This toy calculation is here to show why the number of opportunities matters.

Do not move the target after the arrow

Before a trial, decide what counts. Does 13 count? 31? A price containing 13? Three objects beside one object? If all of these are accepted only after they occur, the target is expanding.

The same applies to a desired result. “Someone replied to the email before Friday” is different from “I felt that the reply had already happened.” Both can be experiences. They cannot be exchanged while keeping the same claim.

Meaning without a command

You are allowed to find a coincidence moving. An experience does not become worthless when it has an ordinary explanation. You can use it as an occasion to ask what matters to you, or to remember the action you already chose.

But a found pattern need not issue instructions. If it says to abandon the notebook, ignore competing explanations, or treat another person's choices as objects under your control, the story is overreaching.

The practical question is modest: did the pattern help you make a thoughtful move? The factual question is stricter: what evidence would distinguish your explanation from chance, selective attention, or the alternatives you already listed?
