HOUSE NOTESThe room
The room
you hear.
A film continues beyond the boundary of its image.
Find the distant sound.
Listen for a train outside, footsteps in another room or weather beyond a window. These sounds create distance even when the camera remains close.
Listen for the pause.
Silence is rarely empty. A pause may bring a room tone forward, change the rhythm of a conversation or make an ordinary sound feel unfamiliar.
Compare the spaces.
Notice how a voice sounds in a kitchen, a station and an open field. A soundtrack can describe the surfaces of a place without showing them.
