Some approaches use a handheld instrument to apply a controlled input during treatment. The equipment does not replace an appropriate assessment or a discussion of whether treatment is suitable.

Before treatment, ask what the instrument does, why it is proposed and what alternatives are available. Tell the clinician about your preferences and any concerns.
